Is Common Sense Dead?

2 November 2009 32 Comments

I have a short story, followed by pictorial evidence supporting the idea that common sense is in fact, dead.

I was getting off work one night, walked out to my car and parked next to me was a guy I worked with. He was staring at his back right tire on his truck. He said, “damn it! My tire seems to be flat on the bottom.” I thought that sounded weird, so I asked, “just on the bottom, buddy?” He kicked the tire, and said, “yea, it’s seems to be o.k. on the top. If we could just roll it a little bit, I think I could get it home.”

That is a true story! I can’t make shit like that up. I now present to you, my pictorial evidence…

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.   He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain;

Why the early bird gets the worm;

Fire is hot;

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies, don’t

spend more than you can earn.  And reliable strategies like, adults, not

children, are in charge.

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6 year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.  It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.  Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights; Someone Else Is To Blame, and I’m A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

    Being in the military, I’ve come to realize they assume no one has common sense. For example, the instructions printed on a US M79 Rocket Launcher states - “Aim towards the Enemy.”

    I think from time to time we are all guilty of not using the best judgment.

    I think we get so much information, from everywhere, internet, work, family, cell phones ect. that we seem to be loosing our common sense.

    I don’t see what’s so bad about the electical stuff in the pool. It’s a rubber pool. They should be o.k. White boyz need to tan up a little though.

    Define “common sense.” The world isn’t as big as it once was. With technology that can bring us around the world at the speed at which we can talk. So “common” isn’t what it once was. True, people should know not to sit in a pool and have electrical outlets floating in it. (SiLK2… really? C’mon)

    I love the post though. Made me and my wife laugh.

    @ SiLK2 are you serious? please tell me you’re kidding.

    John, I don’t think she’s kidding. Her comment, just goes to show that there really are people like that. What’s amazing is how long they live. hehe

    I actually went to snopes.com and asked about the woman who said elephants were larger than the moon. Never happened. It was a woman on the equivalent show in U.K.

    SiL K2 has an excellent point, everyone of those people in the above pics should be in that pool, after all they are the ones responsible for the death of commonsense. Eye for an eye!

    I think common sense died in the US a very long time ago, also, I think you need to sort your own head out if you don’t think the upside down ‘blond’ number plate is on purpose and being ironic.

  • Assaf said:

    “Common Sense” actually has nothing to do with prevalence, but rather it means “The sense of a commoner”. The expression meant to detract from nobles, who had no sense at all. At least according to the commoners. I’m sure that the the nobles had a different opinion…

    YES IT IS!

    At school, we can’t write on our hands/arms/anywhere else… But most of the teachers really couldn’t care less if we passed notes with swearwords on them. Only a few teachers will confront you if you pass notes. I don’t see why we can’t write on our hands/arms when we don’t have any paper to write on and something is really (or partially) important.

    R.I.P., Common Sense!

    BTW: SiLK2, you seem to be a good example of Common Sense’s death. Sorry, just saying.

    the electricity in mains supply will still penetrate the rubber pool and ground itself. it will go through them cause they have a lower resistance…and dont be racist some white people dont tan :P

    This is so sad but true… What’s wrong with people. :(

  • Daven said:

    @mike: It’s not a matter of the electricity being able to conduct through the rubber to the physical ground. The ground is supplied in the plug itself and corresponding wires back to whatever wall socket. Electricity will take the shortest/easiest route to ground (or really it’s technically the other way around with electrons flowing from negative to positive *stupid Ben Franklin*, but the point is the same).

    It should be pointed out however, that the plug in question is a 220 volt European plug. So it’s not just American’s who’ve lost their common sense.

  • Matt said:

    Dude you are stupid, you’re the one who lacks common sense. The blonde license plate is that way on purpose.

  • Amanda said:

    Those photos are so obviously shopped. Just look at the one of the man standing on two ladders. If you look close enough, you can see that he is actually standing on the top level of the orange one and the silver one was digitally added. This in itself does lack common sense, but its not as bad as they shopped it to appear. And the one about “Who wants to be a millionare” is fake…you can see where the actual question is shaded out(its a totally different shade of black). Yes, some of the pics contain legitimatly dumb people, but some are obviously shopped.

  • Taerh said:

    The ladder looks in no way shopped, and its pretty obvious he isnt standing on the orange ladder (angled foot), and that’s simply a bad quality picture of the elephant/moon one, as it appears to me.

    The pool is either filled with A: distilled water (does not conduct electricity) or B: has rubber coating on all of the wires, which, guess what… it does. Its actually a pretty good idea what they did with the electrical strip.

  • stockyzeus said:

    the electric pool looks legit. water does not conduct electricity.

  • Marshall said:

    Just so you know, the “elephant/moon bigger” picture is a shoop.

    The tragic thing here is that you american commenters (at least I guess you are, since you insist on pointing out that some of there are not american) dont get that this is about common sence in GENERAL and is in no way directed towards americans :S Everyone has a right to be wrong, though some misuse it.

    Oh, and you are supposed to get a laugh out of it, not get offended :P

    @flightLord

    I believe it starts with accusations particularly from Ricky

    “I think common sense died in the US a very long time ago, also, I think you need to sort your own head out if you don’t think the upside down ‘blond’ number plate is on purpose and being ironic.”

    The picture with the outlet in the water was a long time ago captioned as “Americans Yes they are that stupid” and later caught and corrected by undoubtedly an American. So the cycle continues. In reality it should say “Humans”

    @stockyzeus

    Furthermore no, water is not a conductor, however many minerals dissolved in most water, are. With such a large quantity of water, I highly doubt it’s distilled. Sealed or not, wires in a pool you’re sitting in is not a smart move.

  • Mili said:

    Amanda: shut the fuck up, nobody wants to hear your “shopped” shit.

    flightLord: the Americans understand it is not directly aimed towards them, but to all of humanity.

    Matt: Heh, you could be right there, but then again, you could be VERY very wrong. Never underestimate the power of idiots, especially in groups. You’ll do well to remember that.

    Mike/Taerh: You’re fucking kidding me right? You really don’t see a problem with electrical wires in a pool… To the distilled water comment, really? Would you spend that kind of money to fill a pool with distilled water? It would be pointless.

    Kavyle: WHAT?! How was this relevant to ANYTHING here in this thread? But I agree, SiLK2 is fucking retarded.

    Local Idiot: Please reproduce, you and your wife seem to be mildly intelligent in the least.

  • Swampy said:

    sigh … The majority of the comments add precedance to the idea of the death of common sense.
