I Was Bored

You ever get bored? Your mind starts to wonder things, so you go to Google and start to type in random words like, “history of…”  Then like magic it brings up the top ten search results based on what you typed in so far. Well today was one of those days for me.  The following is what I learned today.
Who Invented Chapstick?
A physician named Dr. C.D. Fleet, invented Chapstick in the early 1880’s. The first chapstick resembled a small wickless candle wrapped in tin foil. He later sold his recipe to a guy named John Morton in 1912 for five bucks! Of course back in the day, that was probably a decent amount of money.  John and his wife then started making the chapstick out of their home using old brass tubes to mold the sticks. It wasn’t long before the business took off and the Morton Manufacturing Corporation was born. Off the sales of Chapstick.
When was the dog whistle invented?
The Galton Whistle as it was first called, was invented around 1890 by Francis Galton. Francis was half cousins to Charles Darwin.  Some of the more interesting things in the article I read about the Galton Whistle, or more commonly known dog whistle, were that cat’s had the most sensitive hearing. Allowing them to hear notes that dogs could not.  It was also noted that larger dogs could not hear some of the notes that smaller dogs could.
How early in history were they using soap?
Soap materials were found in clay cylinders as early as early as 2800 B.C. Supposedly there were inscriptions on the cylinders that indicated that fats were boiled with ashes, which is a method of making some soaps.  Later ancient Egyptians were known to use the fats and ashes as hair styling gels.  The Ebers Papyrus, a medical document from around 1500 B.C., describes the mixing of animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to form a soap material used for treating skin deseases.  (yea, its amazing what a bath with soap will do for a rash. haha)
